We create the coldest matter in the universe and use it to study physics on the smallest-imaginable scales (the quantum properties of complicated materials) to the very largest (gravitational wave signatures of astrophysical phenomena such as black hole mergers). All our work depends on the interaction of atoms with patterns of laser light, and at our exhibit you will see how we use the science of waves to create interesting patterns to trap and control particles. You will see how the familiar science of light, sound and particles can combine to answer some of the most challenging scientific questions, improving our understanding of the fundamental science of the universe, as well as informing research into the technologies and materials of the future.
